Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between goTenna Pro X and goTenna Pro X2?

  • The new compact antenna was introduced to enhance body-mounted performance and usability.
  • Improved power management features enable continuous operation with solar battery systems and charge management when directly tethered to smartphones.
  • New Aspen Grove 1.2 networking protocols with significant performance improvements. Learn more here.
  • Enhanced range performance for both Bluetooth and between goTenna Pro X2 devices.

Will goTenna Pro X and goTenna Pro X2 work on the same network?

Yes. goTenna Pro X devices may be upgraded to Aspen Grove 1.2 firmware free of charge.

Will the goTenna Pro X2 work with the goKit and goKit 2?

Yes, the goTenna Pro X2 is fully compatible with the goKit 2. The goTenna Pro X2 will charge in the legacy goKit, however some legacy goKits may not support bulk firmware updates when used with goTenna Pro X2. To upgrade to the goKit 2 click here.

Does the Pro X2 require different software?

No.

Is there a difference in battery performance between goTenna Pro X and goTenna Pro X2?

The goTenna Pro X2 shares the same battery as the goTenna Pro X.  However, with Aspen Grove 1.2 protocols, users on both radios should see an improvement in battery life compared to AG 1.1 protocols.

Is goTenna Pro X2 MIL-STD-810 compliant?

Yes, see spec sheet for a detailed breakdown.

Which antennas are included with the goTenna Pro X2?

The goTenna Pro X2 features an SMA connector to facilitate use with various goTenna and third party antennas for portable, mobile, and fixed applications. Included with each Pro X2 are two UHF antennas:

  • Compact: The 2.5” whip antenna is ideal for body-mounted operation.

  • Performance: The 5.5” whip antenna offers broader band coverage for UHF.

It does not come with a VHF antenna. For other antenna inquiries, please reach out to prosupport@gotenna.com to speak with a representative or contact us using the form below.

Can I still use a VHF antenna with the goTenna Pro X2?

We have found that UHF provides the best performance for portable, body-mounted use cases. For this reason, we have included both a compact and a performance UHF antenna with each goTenna Pro X2. While the goTenna Pro X2 also operates on VHF frequencies, we recommend this band primarily for mobile vehicular and fixed installations. For more information, please reach out to our customer support team for further guidance.

What is the range for goTenna Pro X2?

It depends on the terrain and elevation. The higher you place a goTenna Pro X2 in terms of elevation, the wider your bubble of coverage. One of our recent tests had a range of 126 miles, point-to-point using an aerial relay.

  • 15 miles line-of-sight with standard, body-mounted configuration.

  • 55 miles line-of-sight with an elevated ground relay.

  • Over 100 miles using an aerial relay.

So, goTenna Pro X2 doesn’t support voice communications?

That’s correct. goTenna’s Aspen Grove™ mesh networking protocols are designed to support short-burst data transmissions like position, location and information (PLI) updates, map markings, and text-based messaging. Our low-bandwidth networks allow us to build devices that are smaller, lighter, and more cost-effective than traditional tactical-grade mesh radios.

Take a look at some of our recent case studies to learn how teams augment voice communications with goTenna Pro X. In many instances, more frequent and accurate location tracking through a mesh network meant teams could restrict voice radio traffic to essential mission updates. Other teams use built-in mobile keyboard functionality to record voice-to-text messages for more hands-free operations.

What are the licensing requirements to operate goTenna Pro X2?

goTenna Pro X2 is designed for professional use, and offers user-selectable frequencies in the VHF (142 - 175MHz) and UHF (445 - 480MHz) bands. These frequencies may require an FCC Part 90 license to operate in the United States. If you have questions about radio frequency licensing requirements or intend to use goTenna Pro X2 in another country, please contact us using the form at the bottom of this page.
